Microsoft removal of basic authentication on 1 OCT 2022

Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online)

From https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/clients-and-mobile-in-exchange-online/deprecation-of-basic-authentication-exchange-online

In September 2021, we announced that effective October 1, 2022, we will begin disabling Basic authentication for Outlook, EWS, RPS, POP, IMAP, and EAS protocols in Exchange Online. SMTP Auth will also be disabled if it is not being used. See full announcement: Basic Authentication and Exchange Online – September 2021 Update.

We recommend customers connecting to Microsoft mailboxes migrate to the Microsoft 365 (Graph) type provided (inbound and outbound), which uses OAuth 2.0.

Google Gmail

From 30 May 2022, Google have stopped supporting basic authentication for apps.

For now, less secure app (SLA) access is apparently still possible, but they don’t recommend its use. If you decide to use this route you may need to enable 2-step verification and App Passwords to make it work.

We recommend customers connecting to Gmail mailboxes using the following Message Source connection types migrate to the IMAP Gmail OAuth type provided, which uses OAuth 2.0.

  • POP (presets and custom)

  • IMAP (presets and custom)
