We became aware of a mail loop scenario with a 4minute cycle:

  • external user sends a mail to a non-JEMHC managed mailbox, adding a comment on an issue

  • JEMHC gets a webhook, which gets bigger, and bigger over time

  • JEMHC mails out to the correctly configured addressee, which appears to be the Jira mailbox not processed/filtered by JEMHC.

 

The problem here is twofold:

  • the issue is likely getting a vast number of comments for no real reason

  • JEMHC was continuing to process these ever increasing webhooks, potentially causing system instability in future

Action taken

Webhooks that exceed 60MB are quite likely to be the result of a mail loop (some 6x the standard max size) , in such a case, the events will not be processed to generate email. This then breaks the potential loops.

We have seen already that the one customer with this configuration has had the loop broken.
